yesterday was trinity sunday. i presided mass at Christ our Hope in downtown seattle. the opening blessing was (in spanish) “may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
my homily highlighted grace-love-communion
i have given this opening blessing countless times as a priest. but somehow yesterday these words had a special energy-spirit to them. perhaps it is about the connection between grace-love-communion. perhaps it is because our country and the protests against police racism/abuse of power are affecting so many communities. perhaps it is about the lack of grace-love-communion in our world. perhaps it is about the changing ways that we are seeing and experiencing grace-love-communion now.
whatever the reason, we all need grace-love-communion and God gives these to us in as gift! not earned, but gift
in our sinfulness– especially our pride and selfishness– we block these gifts from God from our lives and in our relationships. at our best, when we open ourselves to recieve these as pure gifts, miracles happen in our lives.
today, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you! always and in all ways
