this morning, we are still waiting for the results from the 2020 elections. polls closed last night but with the extraordinary time of covid restrictions and the increase of mail in ballots, the counting is going to take extra time to get it right.
how patient are we?
last night president trump claimed fraud in the election suggesting that counting after midnight will lead to illegal ballots just showing up. he said that the supreme court should be the means to proceed. he proclaimed that he won the election. while not all together surprising given his previous statements, this has not happened before on the night of the general election. these statements poison the well and continue to erode confidence in our democratic systems.
there has not been any evidence of widespread voter fraud in the processing of votes.
these statements will probably embolden the extremist followers of trump to reject the results if he loses a state that is close in its count. to loyal followers of the president, it is his latest statement that sets a post-election atmosphere of fraud in a trump loss. these actions widen our division as a society and it is just another brick in the “fake news” wall that has been a constant battle cry.
so, that is how patient trump is. he has been consistently volatile these past four years.
my hope this morning is that cooler heads will prevail. perhaps this is the time when we will hear the voices of true leaders that will unify us, not further divide us. in the religious perspective, leaders ought to promote peaceable action.
i am curious what our catholic leaders will say. i am curious as to what the followers of jesus will choose to hear.
these upcoming days will shine a light on our personal and collective character as people and a nation. i pray that the Spirit give us wisdom and courage to live our faith well in the muck of it all.
let us pray for our nation:
God our Father, giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care. You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for your glory and dwell among your people.
Send your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing your will.
Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death.” Lead us into a new millennium of life. We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
Amen.
