as i was watching the speech from president-elect joe biden’s last night, my ears perked up when he mentioned his and his son beau’s favorite church song. i thought to myself that he was going to say “be not afraid” or “amazing grace.” i smiled when he said “on eagles’ wings” and started his presidential-type rap of a few lines from the song.
“on eagles’ wings” was written in 1979 by michael joncas. i have sung it countless times but it has been a while since last i have heard it. the verses are based on psalm 91 ( https://bible.usccb.org/bible/psalms/91 ). the reference to eagles’ wings in the refrain is based on exodus 19: 4; deuteronomy 32: 11.
i heard an interesting commentary on how an eagle teaches her newborns how to fly. since their nests are on cliffs, at the proper time, the mother will push her young out of the nest so that it free falls. then the mother swoops down and catches her baby eagle on her wing and flys it back up to the nest. this is done until the young eagle can learn to fly on its own.
it is a wonderful image on how God protects us from danger and raises us up.
so, after the speech, i got my six string and the sheet music out and sang “on eagles’ wings.” this is the first time that i have ever recorded a video like this so please forgive me if it does not inspire you or if it offends your ears! but first, let us pray…
Lord, may we as a nation have this kind of trusting faith in You. please help us as we keep flapping our wings as we learning to fly.
Father Art, that was GREAT! Seeing and hearing you play was a gift to Lo and I this morning! It brought us to the memory of our Awakening days! Thank you for this special gift and prayer this morning!

Oh Fr Art. Wonderful. Bob and I so enjoyed what you wrote and your song. Love your messages. Bob has all kinds of ideas of what you should do, but we won’t get into that. He thinks you can do just about anything. Hugs and prayers and stay safe.
